CFL and LED Bulbs

You can really change the world, one light bulb at a time. Switching to Compact Fluorescent Light Bulbs (CFLs) saves you energy and money, all while helping the environment. CFLs last up to 10 times longer than standard bulbs and use only 1/3 the energy of a standard incandescent bulb. For even MORE energy savings, choose an LED bulb, which can last up to 25,000 hours or 22.5 years. That's 25 times longer than an incandescent bulb while using 84% LESS energy to produce the same amount of light output or lumens.

Now you can purchase discount CFL and LED bulbs from our on-line store.

Recycle Your CFLs

Compact Fluorescent Light Bulbs have a small amount of mercury in them and should be recycled after they burn out. Ironically, CFLs present an opportunity to prevent mercury from entering our air, where it most affects our health. The highest source of mercury in our air comes from burning fossil fuels. Because a CFL uses 75 percent less energy than an incandescent light bulb and lasts at least 6 times longer, a power plant will emit 10 mg of mercury to produce the electricity to run an incandescent bulb, compared to only 2.4 mg of mercury to run a CFL for the same time. However, since CFL bulbs contain a small amount of mercury, it is important that we dispose of the bulbs safely. The Daviess-Martin County REMC office is a recycling location. Just seal your used CFLs in a plastic bag and bring them to the REMC. Look for the RecyclePak logo when you enter our office.
